Computer equipment maker 3Com Corporation will cut up 30 jobs at its Dublin headquarters as part of a global cost cutting plan. Almost 1,100 staff at 3Com's Blanchardstown plant were told yesterday that management wanted voluntary redundancies.
3Com is shedding 1,200 jobs worldwide due to the US economic downturn and turmoil in the telecoms industry.
The company, which develops products that enable customers to connect to information and services, is seeking annual cost savings of up to $200 million (€220 million).
Mr Bruce Clafin, 3Com president and chief executive, said 3Com would focus all its resources on work critical to market leadership and superior financial returns.
3Com would focus on cost reductions in four areas: employment, discretionary costs, product costs and savings in plant/property and equipment, he said. These job losses are the latest in a series of lay-offs at technology firms in the State prompted by a slump in demand for technology products in the US. Last week Nortel Networks shed 40 jobs in Galway while Gateway says up to 132 jobs may go at its Dublin plant.
