AST computers in Limerick and a restaurateur in Co Waterford made the largest of 46 settlements with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners in the period from July 1st to September 30th, 1999, according to the latest issue of Iris Oifigiuil.

The Government publication lists settlements topping £2.5 million (#3.2 million) which were made during the period, with the Limerick computer company accounting for more than one-fifth of the total.

AST (Irl) Ltd, with an address at Raheen Industrial Estate, Limerick, made a settlement of £622,605, comprising tax underpaid of £467,498 and interest and penalties totalling £155,107. A spokesman for the company was not available yesterday.

AST, which is owned by the Korean company, Samsung, reduced its workforce last year, with its manufacturing operations being moved to cheaper locations overseas.

Restaurateur Mr Kieran Walker, of 44 Mayor's Walk, Waterford, had tax underpaid of £143,728 and paid £107,454 in interest and penalties, making a total of £251,182. He could not be contacted last night.

Athlone Town football club is also listed, having made a settlement of £21,538.

Publicans feature prominently in the list, accounting for eight of the 46 entries. Smyths of Haddington Road Ltd, of Haddington Road, Dublin 4, made a settlement of £62,000, while Mr James O'Doherty, of the Chasin' Bull, Main Street, Bundoran, Co Donegal, made a settlement of £56,132.

Mr John O'Sullivan, publican, of Douglas West, Co Cork, is listed as having made a settlement of £50,000, while fellow publican Mr Patrick Kidney, of Canon O'Leary Place, Cobh, Co Cork, made a settlement of £41,000.

A sand, gravel and concrete products company, Faser Court Ltd, of Gorey, Co Wexford, made a settlement of £149,064 while a boutique, A & M Bergin Ltd, of JKL St, Edenderry, Co Offaly, made a settlement of £112,166. A landscape gardener, Mr Bartley Boyle, of Carrow nedan, Aughamore, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, made a settlement of £104,442.

A separate list of persons fined for failing to lodge income tax returns includes musician Mr Edward Furey, of Peamount Road, Newcastle, Co Dublin, who was fined £1,250, and Mr Patrick J Madigan, a solicitor and former Fianna Fail councillor, of 33 Raglan Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, who was fined £1,000.

There were a total of 290 fines listed, with the total for fines and penalties being £316,450.
