BASF Ireland has recorded a 13 per cent drop in sales to £37 million in the first half of 1997. This contrasts with the 15.5 per cent growth in sales to DM14.4 billion (£5.4 billion) generated by its German parent.

The decline in the Irish sales is attributed to a contraction in sales in the agriculture and nutrition division. Despite favourable growth conditions, BASF said there was price pressure in both food and feed sectors and in the agricultural sector.

Other divisions, however, enjoyed growth. Sales in chemicals and specialities rose by 18 per cent. This was most pronounced in industrial, fine and specialty chemicals, reflecting the booming trend in the pharmaceuticals manufacturing side. Ultra Polymers Ireland achieved "double digit growth in its targeted market, engineering polymers". BASF Ireland employs 25 people.
