Martin Varsavsky is without a doubt that mythical creature, the serial entrepreneur. His first company was founded in 1984 when he was still in college. Since then he has started biotechnology, telecommunications and internet businesses on two continents.
Since making his first million dollars from renovating a Manhattan loft in 1987, Varsavsky has founded pan-European telco Viatel, Spanish internet portal Ya. com, and was recently estimated by Forbes magazine to be worth about half a billion dollars.
These days, the Argentinian, who lives in Spain, spends much of his time on Fon, the community Wi-Fi network which he founded in 2006 and which has brought investment from Skype, Google and top-tier venture capitalists, Index Ventures and Sequoia Capital.
Varsavsky attracted attention this week following comments he made in London at Seedcamp, a conference on internet start-ups. He said that in Europe, entrepreneurs were often viewed as crooks rather than as essential to the economic landscape.
Varsavsky discusses issues such as this on his blog, which now attracts about 300,000 visitors a month. A large number of posts relate to Wi-Fi and wireless technology more broadly, including interesting snapshots of how the Fon service is being used and promoted around the globe.
He is not afraid to fly in the face of the technology industry's collective wisdom and admitted recently he no longer used Apple's iPhone - in fact he never stopped using his Blackberry and Nokia phone. "I only used my iPhone to look cool whereas I used the other phones to do things," he wrote, adding he would not be replacing his stolen iPhone.
Varsavsky also covers totally unrelated issues that he just happens to be interested in, such as nuclear power, America's war on terror and the new Spanish social phenomenon of Botellón, or informal open-air night clubs.
Varsavsky is an early-stage investor in a range of European technology start-ups in much the same way that successful Silicon Valley types become angel investors.
As well as managing Fon and his portfolio of investments Varsavsky finds the time to blog in English and Spanish. This is one 40-something multimillionaire who won't be retiring to the farm.
