The Irish division of building group BAM will net €70 million of a €270 million rail construction contract awarded to the multinational company.

Network Rail, the organisation responsible for managing Britain’s railways, has awarded BAM Nuttall, the group’s British subsidiary, the contract to build the Borders railway in Scotland in a deal value at €270 million.

The Borders Railway will connect the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, with Tweedbank in Galashiels in Borders, to provide the first passenger service between the centres for more than 40 years.

BAM Contractors, the Irish subsidiary of the Netherlands-based BAM construction and engineering group, said yesterday that it would earn €70 million from the contract.

It will be involved in the design and construction of the new rail line.

Up to 50 Irish engineers, project managers and quantity surveyors will be employed.
