’Tis the season for office parties, when bosses get accosted and photocopiers get disinfected.

Eugene F Collins, the Dublin law firm, warned in its e-briefing during the week, however, that employment law can also extend to the shenanigans at staff parties.

It regaled the story of how one man was awarded €25,000 when he was sacked unfairly following a fight at one staff party. The firm doesn’t name anybody, but it is referring to a 2012 incident at a party for the staff of Bewleys Airport Hotel.

Proving that lawyers are born spoilsports, the firm warns: “Employees should be reminded of their obligations prior to attending such seasonal functions . . . [and] be reminded that inappropriate behaviour, for example, being in breach of dignity in the workplace policies, at the Christmas party may lead to disciplinary action.”

I always thought the “breaches of dignity” are what make a Christmas party.
