Company tightens Internet security

Internet security issues are still paramount in many consumers' minds

Internet security issues are still paramount in many consumers' minds. To alleviate these worries, American Express is offering free "smart card" readers to its blue card customers in the UK.

The device plugs into ordinary personal computers. Net shoppers wishing to make a purchase online swipe their card through the reader and enter a PIN number.

American Express, which has also conducted trials on the reader in the United States, said it reduces the chance of fraud and the hassle of typing in credit card details. Receipts are stored in the reader through an electronic wallet, allowing customers to keep track of expenses.

A spokeswoman said there were no immediate plans to launch the service in the Republic.
