The new iMac personal computer, which Apple hopes will secure its future, was launched on the Irish market yesterday. The global success of the device will also determine the future of jobs at the computer giant's Cork plant.

The 233 megahertz iMac is priced at £5 less than the psychologically important £1,000 level (before VAT). But with 21 per cent VAT included, the retail price will be £1204. Only three connections power, mouse and keyboard are required to make it ready for use. "I would not be surprised if we sold 10,000 in the first year," said Mr Robbie Hanlon, managing director of Apple Computer Sales Ireland.
