A NEW £9.27 million investment by a Dublin telecommunications company could create up to 77 new, highly-skilled IT jobs in Belfast over the next two years.

Intune Networks, which builds advanced optical networking platforms for high-definition video and IT services, has confirmed plans to set up a new research and development centre in the North.

The project will receive financial support totalling £983,000 from Invest NI, Northern Ireland’s regional development agency,

Tim Fritzley, CEO of Intune Networks, said the Belfast centre would develop key sub-systems for its new product line and help improve its competitiveness.

“This product line has the potential to solve some of the largest cost-performance problems facing the telecoms world today.

“Invest NI’s ongoing support and flexibility in dealing with the unique needs of our project has been instrumental, particularly as we have initially focused on rapidly building a strong core team of developers to ramp up RD activities,” said Mr Fritzley.

The North’s Economy Minister Arlene Foster believes Intune Network’s move to Northern Ireland could deliver an annual £2.7 million boost for the local economy in salaries.

Welcoming the investment yesterday, the Minister said: “Intune Networks is a highly-innovative business in the competitive telecommunications market.

“It is precisely the type of company that we wish to attract to Northern Ireland as it brings highly-skilled jobs and spin-off opportunities, further strengthening the local knowledge base.”
