The number of people claiming unemployment benefit fell by 400 last month, according to the latest Live Register figures.
The seasonally adjusted register, which also includes casual and part-time workers, was 435,200 in September.
This gave rise to a standardised unemployment rate of 14.8 per cent, unchanged from the previous month.
In unadjusted terms, the CSO figures indicated there were 429,335 claimants on the Live Register in September, representing an annual decrease of 8,106 or 1.9 per cent.
The CSO’s quarterly national household survey, released last month, also estimated the rate of unemployment at 14.8 per cent of the labour force.
A breakdown of today's figures showed the number of male claimants fell by 100 in September, with female claimants declining by 300 in the same period.
As of the end of September, there were 273,789 men signing on the register and 155,546 women.
The number of male claimants fell by 8,199 (2.9 per cent) in the 12 months to September, while the number of female claimants fell by just 93 (0.1 per cent).
This compares with a decrease of 7,810 (-2.7 per cent) to 281,988 for males and an increase of 2,834 (+1.9 per cent) to 155,453 for females in the year to September 2011.
