CATRIONA FITZPATRICK, wife of the former chairman of Anglo Irish Bank, Seán FitzPatrick, had bank balances totalling more than €1.6 million earlier this year.

She also had an interest in an investment fund that was worth more than a quarter of a million euro, according to documents filed with the courts as part of her husband’s bankruptcy.

Ms FitzPatrick registered as a creditor of her husband recently and so had a potential say in the efforts of Anglo Irish Bank to have its trustee appointed over her husband’s bankruptcy. She is owed €53,569 by her husband, according to documents handed to the court.

She and five other relatively small creditors came forward at a late stage with debts that have been accepted by the official assignee, Chris Lehane. He will oversee Mr FitzPatrick’s bankruptcy following the withdrawal of the Anglo proposal.

A report by independent accountants O’Connor Kelliher Treacy was drafted in February as part of Mr FitzPatrick’s bankruptcy proceedings.

It listed a number of bank accounts which were in the joint names of Mr and Ms FitzPatrick. However, it only listed half of the amounts held in the accounts as only Mr FitzPatrick’s share is available to his creditors.

The accounts were with Anglo, ICS Building Society, Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank and included sterling and dollar accounts. The total attributed to Mr FitzPatrick was 50 per cent of the balances, according to the accountants’ report, and was €1.62 million.

Mr FitzPatrick’s assets include an interest in a Hyposwiss Bank investment portfolio which he owns jointly with his wife. His interest in the portfolio in July had a value of €238,314.

Ms FitzPatrick has also, in the period since December 2009, become the owner of half of Mr FitzPatrick’s Anglo Irish Bank Approved Retirement Fund.

The value of Mr FitzPatrick’s half of the fund in July was €3.43 million.

The couple are joint owners of their family home in Greystones, Co Wicklow, as well as two investment properties there, and apartments in Smithfield and Killiney in Dublin and in Marbella, Spain.

Many of the properties are mortgaged. Documents in the accountants’ report show the Smithfield apartment had an original value of €900,000, was the subject of a €955,000 mortgage from Haven Mortgages, and had a value earlier this year of €440,000.

The Killiney apartment had an original value of €2.8 million, was the subject of a €2.66 million mortgage from Haven, and had a value of €950,000 earlier this year.

The three-bedroom Spanish apartment was bought for €438,000.

Mr FitzPatrick has assets of more than €49 million and debts of €145.8 million. The vast bulk of his debts are to Anglo Irish Bank. In his statement of affairs filed to the courts this week, he said he had a net monthly income of €188.
