Mr Horst Kohler, the EU candidate to head the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will meet officials from the US Treasury and the IMF in Washington today and tomorrow.

Mr Kohler would be accompanied by German Finance Minister Mr Hans Eichel, diplomatic sources said.

He will meet Mr Larry Summers, the US Treasury Secretary and his likely number two at the IMF, Mr Stanley Fischer, interim director of the international body, according to a representative of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development which Mr Kohler currently heads.

The IMF formally accepted Mr Kohler's nomination as director from the EU on Tuesday. He received the support of the United States, Japan and Russia.
