Adopting a more open attitude to immigration is not only in the Republic's economic self-interest but would also be a sign of a mature and prosperous society, according to the Tanaiste, Ms Harney.

Speaking at a symposium "Managing Our Economies", Ms Harney said that "fresh thinking" was needed in the area of immigration policy as immigrants had a lot to offer the country in social, cultural and economic terms.
