Information technology is making an increasingly significant contribution to the study of ancient civilisations, cultures and arts. Next week Network 2's Tech TV will explore how a new imaging device is helping reveal what was going through Michelangelo's mind when he opted to destroy the Florentine Pieta, a carving of three figures from one solid piece of marble. It was thought he had designed the piece for his own grave. The new camera, developed by IBM creates a 3D image of the sculpture on screen, amounting to 700 overlapping photographs. A grid laser beam then projected onto the statue, allows all the individual digital patches appear as a single computer image, providing clues to the artist's pattern of progress. Tuesday's programme will also look into cybercinema, which uses satellite technology to broadcast high definition images to theatres. These are then translated and decoded in the projection boxes, potentially making film prints and subtitles a thing of the past. Sticking to the audio-visual theme, digital video disks (DVDs) and digital cameras will also be explored.
