Products: Foreign exchange charges: Charges in excess of the amount notified to the regulator were applied to foreign exchange customers. Total amount: €25.6 million in approximately three million transactions.

Other notification issues: In seven other cases, the rate charged to customers exceeded the notified rate or where the charge was not notified. Total amount: €394,000 for 14,500, including €300,000 for 900 customers in arrangement fees.

The bank uncovered 24 other areas where customers had been overcharged, and will be repaid. Eight of these involved sums of over €76,000. These are:

Surplus Builder: A variable rate home mortgage product introduced in 1993 and discontinued in 2001. This product carried a discount of 0.35 per cent off the variable mortgage rate, but in some cases customers did not receive this. Total amount: €3.6 million to 4,200 customers.

Student and Graduate Facilities: Advertised discounts available to students and graduates were not automatically applied in all cases. Total amount: €1.4 million to 34,000 customers

Overdraft Limit Amendments: In some cases an overdraft facility fee, introduced in 1993 for personal cheque book accounts, was applied where it should not have been. Total amount : €600,000 to 24,000 customers.

Finance and Leasing: This relates to early payments on consumer leases, covering mainly motor vehicles. In some cases the settlement figures were based on a formula which did not have regulatory approval. Total amount: €230,000 to 950 customers.

Personal Savings Plan Products - Loan Discounts: A personal savings plan was developed in 1996 which allowed some customers to apply for a loan at a special discounted rate. In a number of cases this was not correctly applied. Total amount: €196,000 to 2,436 customers.

Overdraft interest on foreign currency held accounts: In some cases the wrong interest rates were applied to business customers who used overdraft facilities on foreign currency accounts. Total amount: between €50,000 and €150,000 (yet to be finally confirmed) to 200 customers.

Merchant terminal rental charge: In some cases a charge levied for the use of merchant terminals to process bank cards continued to be levied after the merchant had stopped using the terminal. Total amount : €112,000 to 155 customers.

Payment protection insurance on mortgage top-ups: Some customers who sought a mortgage top-up have been automatically provided with payment protection on the new mortgage, even when they did not give a specific instruction to provide this on the extended loan. Total amount: €75,000 to 573 customers.

Other areas: In addition to these eight categories, 16 others were identified. Total amount: €300,000 to 2,400 customers.
