Stocks in New York rose with popular technology names leading the market back toward record levels after another encouraging update from Intel. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 14.94 points - or by 0.17 per cent - to 9,056.05. Broader stock indices posted sharper gains, with the technology-rich Nasdaq composite rising more than 1 per cent and moving within 100 points of its July peak of 2,014.25. However, another series of outsized gains in the Internet group evaporated by the close as investors locked in profits from the near-vertical rally of recent sessions.
The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 8.13 to 1,152.61, and the Nasdaq composite rose 22.24 to 1,919.68. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by four-to-three on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), with 1,711 up, 1,269 down and 549 unchanged. Nasdaq gainers led by an eight-to-seven ratio.
NYSE volume totalled 669.39 million shares as of 4 p.m., up from 650.41 million at the same time Wednesday.
