Are you a saver or a spender?

I’m most certainly a spender! I always have been, and unfortunately I have a terribly irresponsible attitude towards money. I have no one to blame but myself.

Doing this questionnaire is making me feel like a bold child already.

Having said that, the mortgage is paid every month and my car is always taxed and insured, so that’s something, I guess.

Do you shop around for better value?

I do make an effort to shop around for better value especially with groceries and car insurance.

I think you can see and feel the difference in a well-made item of clothing so I don’t like to buy certain things like shoes from chain stores.

I’ve got an expensive palate, which is not good when dining out or purchasing everyday groceries, but I’m trying to be smarter all the time when buying.

What has been your most extravagant purchase and how much did it cost?

I have been known to spend a lot of money on shoes, such as Miu Miu wedges recently for €550.

I buy some designer but only really accessory items like handbags, shoes and shades as I’ll be wearing them more often.

I think the most extravagant item was a pair of Marc Jacobs boots for €750.

What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?

I bought a Marc Jacobs bag seven years ago for €480. I still use it most days.

I’ve been told by my mother that it looks a bit tatty, but for me if I love something, and it’s functional, I’ll wear it till it actually falls apart.

Have you ever crossed the Border to shop?

I’ve never done that, but I love buying clothes abroad as generally it’s cheaper and there’s usually more of a selection available elsewhere.

I’d love to drive over to France and pick up lots of lovely wine and cheese. That would be more exciting than a trip to Newry.

Do you haggle over prices?

I’m less self-conscious about haggling. I recently bought a couple of things in Brown Thomas and asked if could do me a deal and he did. Not sure I’d have the nerve to do it in Harrods, though.

Has the recession changed your spending habits?

Yes and no. It’s made me have to work harder for the things I want to have but I still buy the things I did during the boom, which I think is sometimes quite pig-headed of me. My family and friends would say that I definitely don’t have a problem in treating myself. I still live a bit of a student lifestyle, which I think my parents worry about.

Do you invest in shares?

I don’t, but would like to when I grow up.

Cash or card?

A bit of both. I’ve got a credit card limit, which I personally think is too high. This has led to problems, but I’m back in control.

What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money?

I went to an Edun sample sale and bought lots of super cool clothing for me and some Christmas presents for my family at unbelievable prices. When I think about it I feel the urge to do a little victory dance.

Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?

Not really . . . I do need a new everyday handbag and I’ve my eye on either a Pauric Sweeney or a Miu Miu. They are both in the region of €1,200 so I’ll be saving for a while for that, I guess.

Have you ever lost money?

I can be pretty absent-minded and keep forgetting to pay car tolls.

Thankfully, I’ve never really lost money, although I did have my wallets stolen in a London club a year ago.

Are you a gambler and if so have you ever had a big win?

Maybe a flutter at the races but I’m not into gambling at all. I’ve peeked into a bookies and they look like such bleak places.

It’s never occurred to me to play anything online.

Is money important to you?

I’d like to say I’ve a healthy disrespect for money but truth be told I’ve got a rather poor attitude towards it.

I am the ultimate consumer and so I find saving really hard. I remember when I was 16 my oldest sister Lana trying to show me how to budget. She’s always been quite sensible with money and I do think that maybe I should have listened to her more!

How much money do you have on you now?

I’ve got a €50 note and some shrapnel.
