‘Brilliant’ former Evening Press editor dies

Seán Ward always said his greatest achievement was signing Con Houlihan

Seán Ward, editor of the now defunct Evening Press newspaper from 1970 to 1992, has died. He was 78.

His death occurred yesterday at Beaumont hospital in Dublin while he was surrounded by his wife Jean and their children Fiona, Terry, Emer and Jean-Marie.

A former colleague at the Evening Press , journalist John Boland, today described him as "an outstanding news editor, brilliant at being decisive, with a great news sense."

He added: “Seán Ward always said his greatest achievement was Con Houlihan.”

It was Mr Ward who in 1972 persuaded the late great sports writer, who died last August, to leave his beloved Kerry at the age of 46 and begin writing for the Evening Press.

The remains will repose at the family home in Sutton Co Dublin tomorrow from 2 to 4pm before removal to the Church of the Resurrection at Bayside, arriving at 5 o’clock.

The funeral Mass on Monday morning is at 10 o’clock with burial afterwards at Fingal cemetery.
