Pay TV broadcaster Sky has unveiled a new service that allows users to download movies and TV shows to internet-connected devices to watch offline.

The Sky Go Extra service will cost Sky TV customers €6 per month, and can be used on mobile devices or laptops.

The available content depends on the customer’s existing Sky subscription.

The existing Sky Go service, which gives customers access to live TV through up to two mobile devices, currently has three million unique users in Britain and Ireland.

The launch accompanies new research from Sky that found more than 82 per cent of Irish commuters have little access to an internet connection while journeying to work.

More than three quarters of those surveyed said they own a smartphone or tablet, and almost 82 per cent use it on their daily commute.

About 44 per cent check emails that have already been downloaded, and 46.5 per cent said they used their smartphone to play games.

However, when faced with a lack of proper internet connection, 70 per cent said they were frustrated.
