Merck & Co, the second largest US pharmaceutical group, yesterday made a bold announcement that early studies show its AIDS vaccine would prove effective, and said it planned to expand its US sales force by 30 per cent to promote new key drugs. Merck, known to be cautious about forecasting a drug's success, said its vaccine against the HIV virus that causes AIDS would work. The vaccine is still in very early trials.
