In an unprecedented earnings warning by the world's largest software company, Microsoft, it said yesterday that its quarterly and yearly profits would fall short of forecasts by 5 to 6 per cent because of a slowdown in sales to consumers and businesses.

The lower forecast rounded out a cycle of bad news for technology companies, including profit warnings by the world's top PC maker Compaq Computer and the top semiconductor manufacturer, Intel.
