The Nasdaq screen-based stock market has filed with federal regulators for exchange status a move likely to prove controversial with rival US exchanges. Nasdaq's latest attempt to gain independence from its parent organisation, the National Association of Securities Dealers, could be opposed by the likes of the New York Stock Exchange because of exemptions it has requested.

These include an exemption from the rules governing the short-selling of stock.
