Nortel Networks said last night that demand for its telecom gear is still difficult to predict as it posted a massive $3.5 billion third-quarter loss and shrinking sales.

Nortel, which still employs more than 1,500 in Ireland, said losses were $1.08 a share, sharply down from 17 cents a share in the year-ago period.
