Stocks closed mixed in new York yesterday as a slight surge in big technology stocks drove the Nasdaq composite index to a new record. But blue-chip stocks fell on profit-taking and conflicting inflationary news.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 81.35 points, or 0.8%, to close at 10,648.51.
Broad market indexes were mixed. The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 8.81 to 1,354.12, and the technology-laden Nasdaq composite index rose 1.21 to 2,967.64.
Advancing issues were nearly even with decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,550 up, 1,528 down and 446 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 834.55 million shares, against 1.084 billion in the previous session.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 3.05 to 431.69.
