The introduction of laptop computers at the Central Statistics Office (CSO) for the purpose of compiling Quarterly National Household Surveys caused concern about how the respondents would react. Would people come over all coy and evasive when confronted with the dreaded technology? Would part-time workers shy away from revealing details? Would doors be slammed on the 150 enumerators while the rain poured down on their dinky machines? Quite the opposite, in fact, according to the CSO, who pointed out at the launch of their first quarterly results that remarks, rather unfairly, were more like: "It is nice to see the public service doing something efficiently for a change".
