US stocks managed their strongest rally in more than a week yesterday as bargain-hunting investors stepped into a market driven down by fears of higher interest rates.
At the close of trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 119.05 points - or by 1.1 per cent - at 10,793.82. In morning trading, the Dow had fallen 108 points.
Broader stock indicators were mixed, with any gains hard-fought in a session of rapid shifts between positive and negative territory.
On the NYSE, 1,817 issues declined, 1,196 rose and 514 were unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 854.21 million shares, against 781.25 million in the previous session.
The NYSE composite index rose 2.56 to 617.02, and the American Stock Exchange composite index fell 1.22 to 775.74.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 0.05 to 429.75.
