SHANNON Aerospace said yesterday it would create an extra 100 jobs for airplane technicians, citing a doubling of Its workload over the past two years and bulging order books. The company, which is jointly owned by Lufthansa and Swissair, will run a dedicated training programme to bring the new recruits up to scratch.
"Our volume of work has doubled from 1994 to 1996 and is increasing further," said the firm's managing director, Mr Wolfgang Gohde. "Our capacity is fully booked for the year 1997 and into 1998. We are proud to create 100 new jobs in Shannon."
The company, one of the biggest in Shannon, already employs almost 700 people. Based adjacent to the airport, it can work on six aircraft at any one time. The company said yesterday the jobs would be well paid, high tech positions, and with a training period of up to a year.
The Minister for Enterprise and Employment, Mr Bruton, last night hailed the move as a major boost for employment in the company and in the Shannon area. Speaking from California, where he is on a trade mission, Mr Bruton added that the decision was "particularly welcome"
in view of the economic difficulties across the world in the aviation industry up until two years ago.
