German shares surrendered earlier gains to close with a slight setback as dealers looked forward to further consolidation today. The DAX-30 index closed at 5388.47, up 13.69 points, or 0.25 per cent. In later screen-based trade the Xetra DAX index ended at 5359.24, down 8.74 points, or 0.16 per cent. "The dollar's drop is the only negative factor in an economic environment that remains favourable", said one broker. "Wall Street gained ground Tuesday evening."

Paris CAC-40: 3884.61 (+16.95)

French shares closed with gains after tracking the dollar's move amid rumours of a pending Bundesbank rate increase and ahead of the Group of Seven meeting in Washington. Trading was active with volume of 7.8 billion francs on the monthly settlement market.

Italian shares closed at the day's highs, lifted by gains in Telecom Italia and Credito Italiano. The All Share Mibtel index closed at 25776, up 434 points.
