It has been rather dubiously estimated that the time spent reading the details of the Starr Report over the Internet a few weeks ago cost US businesses $470 million ($311.26 million) in productivity. With an estimated 45 to 60 per cent of employees visiting inappropriate sites during working hours, the resultant loss to Irish businesses from lost productivity could be as much as £238 million per year. It is becoming a growing dilemma for businesses everywhere whether to allow their employees access to the Internet if they are going to waste company time exploring irrelevant sites. Next Tuesday's Tech TV on Network 2 looks at one of the latest software programs that denies access to non-business sites, WebSENSE, and how effective it is in tackling the problem.
The programme will also look at the growing interest here in the European Computer Driving Licence, which is helping improve job prospects for the long-term unemployed and give late starters a chance to catch up with the computer revolution. It is hoped 60,000 Irish people will have enrolled for the driving licence by the year 2000. Also featured will be highlights of this year's Internet World show, and spy planes that fit on the palm of your hand.
