European Economic Affairs Commissioner Mr Pedro Solbes said yesterday the next Italian government will have to comply to previously agreed European Union rules for budgetary stability.
Italians vote for a new government on Sunday. Both the centre-right, which is leading the polls, and its rival centre-left have promised extensive tax cuts.
Speaking at a press conference Mr Solbes said there was no room for discussion over whether to change the rules.
"There is no room for discussion because there are specific obligations. It has been decided that Italy will comply with its obligations, whoever is in the government."
The Commission has forecast that Italy's deficit will be 1.3 per cent this year.
