Stocks struggled to another loss today as fears of higher interest rates and soaring bond yields weighed on investors. At the close of trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 6.33 at 10,707.70. Broader stock indicators were also lower.
The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 2.45 to 1,297.84, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 28.99 to 2,518.98. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a three-to-two margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,809 down, 1,202 up and 534 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 674.61 million shares at the close against 695.71 million in the previous session. The NYSE composite index fell 0.58 to 610.46, and the American Stock Exchange composite index fell 0.05 to 777.87. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 2.15 to 425.89. With little fresh economic news or corporate mergers to stimulate trading, prices stalled in a narrow range.
