Blue chip stocks closed higher in New York yesterday amid optimism that interest rates will hold steady, but technology issues fell on profit taking after Monday's big advance.
At the close on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 109.88, or 1.0 per cent, at 10,976.89, adding to Monday's 99-point gain.
Broader stock indicators were mixed. The Standard and Poor's 500 index was up 3.49 at 1,482.81, and the Nasdaq composite index was down 14.44 at 3,848.55 after rising 75 points Monday.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 5-to-4 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 986.30 million shares, up from Monday's pace.
The Russell 2000 index was down 1.14 at 508.73.
