Survey calls for science emphasis

A new survey has called for greater emphasis on the teaching of science in schools

A new survey has called for greater emphasis on the teaching of science in schools. The survey, commissioned by Forfas as part of the Science Technology and Innovation (STI) awareness programme, was conducted among the general public, senior business people, civil servants and transition year students.

Although the survey found that attitudes to science and technology were improving, it also found that many believed science and technology caused more job losses than gains.

The Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce Mr Noel Treacy said the research confirmed the need to continue building public awareness of the important role played by science, technology and innovation.

He announced that the STI awareness programme, originally scheduled to end in 1998, would continue in 1999.
