The Irish Times Business 2000 project made "business come alive in the classroom" a gathering of teachers and company representatives heard yesterday. They were reviewing the first year of the project - an innovative multi-media teaching resource designed to improve standards in business education. Teachers from around the Republic gave an overwhelmingly positive response to the Business 2000 pack which includes case studies of companies, a CD-Rom and a teachers guide. The project is organised in partnership with the Department of Education, Woodgrange Consultants and the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland. "It is an excellent resource which allows us to back up business theory with real life examples and gives the students a chance to develop self-directed learning," said Ms Fiona Kindlon, of Ardee Community School, Co Louth.

The pack, which was sent free to 768 second-level schools last October, had "colossal potential" said Mr William Fagan, the Director of Consumer Affairs, one of the participating organisations.

The pack was also being requested by third-level colleges and overseas organisations, Ms Sile Sheehy, education services manager with The Irish Times, said.
