Dublin-based haulage firm Johnson Brothers is to cut its workforce by nearly one third, making 83 employees redundant.
The workers are to lose their jobs at the end of the month, with the company’s transport and warehouse operations being outsourced to an external provider.
“The new arrangements will regrettably necessitate 83 redundancies at the company’s warehouse and transport operations with the outsourcing of this function to an external provider,” a spokesman said.
Discussions with employee representatives were to begin immediately, he said.
The company, which specialises in sales, merchandising, distribution and logistics, currently employs 283 people in Ballymount in west Dublin. A spokesman said the remaining staff would not be affected by the changes.
Sinn Féin Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe said he was dismayed.
“The Government continues to spin that the worst is over and the economy is recovering but there is little sign of that in Dublin South West or in the wider domestic economy, which is continuing to shrink rapidly,” he added.
