Setanta.com, the online sports portal, will offer its customers live video pictures of major sports events direct to their mobile phones and personal digital assistants.

The service, which can be accessed on GSM mobile phones with Infrared and PDAs that support Windows Media 7, is one of the first wireless video streaming services in Europe.

Initially users will be able to access a variety of archived video footage such as the top hurling goals of the year or footage from the latest Glasgow Celtic match.

However, the company plans to have its live video streaming operating for the AIB club GAA finals in Croke Park on St Patrick's Day.

The service will also cover Celtic's matches in the Scottish premiership and major hurling and GAA matches.

There is no sign up fee for the service which can be accessed at normal mobile phone tariffs. It is likely to prove popular in the US marketplace which has a high penetration of PDAs.

However, download speeds for video clips are likely to remain slow until technical advancements such as third generation telephony are introduced sometime in 2002.

"We already produce the fastest sports reporting and results which are published on mobiles with WAP capability or sent by SMS message," said Mr Frank Cronin, chief executive of Setanta.com.

"Now for the first time in Europe we can bring video footage to sports fans on the move," he said.
