A volatile session on Wall Street ended with mixed results for stocks yesterday. At the close of trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 31.35 points, or by 0.3 per cent, at 10,677.31 after shifting between positive and negative territory for much of the day.
Broader stock indicators were lower. The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 5.87 to 1,322.18 and the Nasdaq composite index fell 35.63 to 2,588.00
NYSE volume totalled 729.35 million shares, against 622.93 million in the previous session.
The NYSE composite index fell 3.14 to 622.20, and the American Stock Exchange composite index fell 3.98 to 779.66
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 6.35 to 436.28.
