Those praying for a solution to Dublin's chronic traffic congestion might be interested in a suggestion put forward by solicitor and property developer, Noel Smyth.

In a speech to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown chamber of commerce on Wednesday, the Dunloe Ewart chairman spoke of a "park and ride" idyll in which spacious car-parks would appear outside a plethora of churches in south Dublin.

"Wouldn't it be wonderful," he said, "to be able to drive to Foxrock Church and in a multi-storey car park beside the Church, park your car and get a bus into Dublin or Dun Laoghaire and be comfortable that neither journey would take more than 15 or 20 minutes."

Mr Smyth spoke in equally glowing terms of the churches at Newtownpark Avenue and Merrion Road although The Margin wonders what the residents of such areas would make of the notion of multi-storey car-parks.

Mr Smyth also had a message for potential users of such facilities. ". . . the fact that you are under the high altar of the church does not mean that you will get a plenary indulgence".
