Eircell this week unveiled what it claimed was the first "environmentally friendly" mobile phone base station in Mullingar, Co Westmeath. The company hopes the station will allay the fears of any locals who may think such stations cause serious health damage. However, arguments over the station's safety may be muted as many locals will not be able to see it. The new station is hidden within a tree.Eircell is planning to plant the new type of station in several parts of the State. It remains to be seen whether local community groups, who have been campaigning against the stations, will be able to see the wood from the trees from now on.
