The opening last Friday of the Denny Lane exhibition at the Cork Archives Institute was the last public event for the institute at Christ Church. Continuing until December 23rd, the exhibition reveals the archive of one of the city's most interesting historical figures: Lane (1818-1895) was a barrister, antiquarian, politician and businessman, and may be best known as the writer of the ballad Carrigdhoun, published by The Nation in 1845
. He was a member of the Young Ireland movement, and his archive includes letters from Thomas Davis, William Smith O'Brien, Charles Gavan Duffy, Richard O'Gorman, John Martin, and Daniel Owen Madden. Next year the institute moves to its premises at Blackpool, financed by the city council's capital development programme for Cork 2005.
