Joe Hanly’s works address the disconcerting complexity of everyday life. The implicit question is: how on earth do we as sensory creatures negotiate the bewildering maze of each new day? Judging by Hanly’s multi- layered composite images, montage/paintings and digital prints, the answer would seem to be that we don’t, really. What we learn to do is ignore a lot of stuff and skim along the surface as if it makes sense.

Hanly is a Dublin-born artist who studied painting at NCAD but has tended to work more in fine art print than painting per se. While initially he looked to traditional print media, he quickly realised the way that digital imaging techniques were changing the rules of the way we see things and the way things can be represented. He has made several series of works exploring this brave new world, including the large- scale, remarkable sequence Loaded.
