Pamela Leonard marks her 70th birthday with this retrospective. A key member of the Graphic Studio Dublin, Leonard has proved over the years to be an unfailingly reliable printmaker, managing a crucial balance between art and craft while ranging across various graphic media.
In terms of craft, she is exemplary, having devised a method of building complex colour schemes and effects working with just two plates. The hallmark of her style is probably the decisive line, most often black, that defines and energises her tightly structured compositions.
Leonard’s landscape subjects include especially Howth and its environs, as well as Donegal, west Limerick and west Cork. She has 16 stamp designs to her credit and, given the strong association of her work with Japanese woodblock prints, it’s appropriate that she won a Japanese award for stamp design. A show well worth catching.
