Tom Hammick is one of those visual artists who, it’s fair to say, has a poetic sensibility. The openness, warmth and humanity of Hammick’s work has won him many admirers in Ireland. Born in Tidworth on the edge of Salisbury Plain, he studied art history in Manchester and apprenticed as a stonemason before going on to study art at Camberwell.
Hammick works across a range of media, making paintings, drawings, tapestries and prints. He is a seasoned printmaker, and this exhibition stems from a month-long residency in Belfast. What comes across consistently in his work is an abiding interest in our relationship to what he clearly feels is the extraordinary, even magical world around us. Time and again Hammick conveys, in elegantly simplified images, everyday moments that are somehow transcendent.
