Le Brocquy is sold for £30,000, twice estimate
A Louis Le Brocquy oil on board, Classic Theme II (September 1943) The Kiss, which was painted exactly 55 years ago last month, sold on Wednesday for £30,000, twice its upper estimate, at James Adam's of Dublin. A pair of 19th-century naif equestrian portraits by Samuel Spode fetched £26,000 and a Paul Henry oil of an Achill bog went under the hammer for £22,000.
Frank McKelvey proved popular at this sale, with his Children in a Park also making £22,000, and the same artist's Figures Cutting Turf in a West of Ireland Landscape sold for £21,000. Sean Keating's Spanish Arch went for £19,000 and James Arthur O'Connor's Wooded River Landscape made £9,700.
1908 Olympics medal sold for £3,000
A gold medal awarded to Carlow-born Colonel J. Millner for long-distance shooting at the 1908 London Olympic Games sold for £3,000 at Whyte's of Dublin last Saturday; the purchaser was a Dublin collector.
An American dealer paid £7,000 at the same sale for an album of US Civil War photographs assembled by Irish officer, General Sir Charles Hastings Doyle.
Other lots which sold well included a complete collection of Irish coins from 1928 to 1968, including a rare 1943 florin (£4,700), a 1653 Commonwealth Crown (£600), a George III 1764 pattern shilling (£750) and an Edward VII complete date set of shillings from 1902-1911 (£550).
19th-century rosewood centre table makes £3,400
A mid-19th-century rosewood centre table made £3,400, an early 19th- century mahogany linen press sold for £1,900 and a late 19th-century mahogany dining table fetched £1,550 at the Hamilton Osborne King salerooms last Wednesday.
A mahogany fold-over card table went for £1,500, as did a mahogany wellington partners' desk, while £1,200 was paid for an Irish mid-19th-century mahogany dining table.
£6,500 for late Victorian oak long-case clock
Plenty of Georgian furniture from two Co Antrim properties was included in last month's antiques auction of 950 lots conducted by John Ross & Co of Belfast. Prices included £6,500 for a late Victorian oak long-case clock with steel and brass filigree dial and £4,200 for an Irish Georgian stick barometer made in Limerick. A Victorian walnut credenza with ormolu mounts sold for £3,600, a Georgian bow-end sideboard with square tapered legs and spade feet fetched £3,000 and a Georgian mahogany bureau bookcase with astragal glazed doors went under the hammer for £2,800.
Regency breakfront secretaire for £14,000
A regency mahogany breakfront secretaire bookcase sold for £14,000 at last month's auction held by Sheppard's of Durrow, where a 19th-century oil equestrian portrait by Henry Calvert made £8,500 and another oil called Taking a Drink by George Horler sold for £7,400.
An Italian 18th-century carved gilt wood console table made £6,000, a large pair of Georgian mahogany and satinwood crossbanded side tables went under the hammer for £4,700 and both a Georgian mahogany and inlaid library table and a bronze bust of a woman by Friedrich Beer fetched £4,600.
Stone-door surround sold for £2,100
A Portland stone-door surround, originally taken from a Dublin house and offered for sale recently by Drum's of Malahide, made £2,100 at auction. On the same occasion, a Victorian two-door secretaire bookcase in mahogany sold for £1,100 and a mahogany bow-front serving table went for £720.
