The 2009 RTÉ Living Music Festival, originally planned for next October, is not the only victim of budget-trimming within RTÉ’s performing groups division in these straitened times. The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra usually goes on two annual national tours, one in March, one in November. This year there will only be one.
It opens in Dublin on Friday, and will take a popular programme of Haydn's Surprise Symphony,Liszt's First Piano Concerto(with German pianist Bernd Glemser) and Brahms's Fourth Symphony, to Sligo, Galway, Limerick, Tralee and Waterford. The orchestra's principal conductor, Gerhard Markson, will be on the podium.
