Hillary Clinton has been in the international public eye for so many years one could easily, but incorrectly, presume to know all there is to know about a woman who has come to embody female statesmanship. However, there are a number of striking things about this memoir, written before she declared herself a candidate in the 2016 US presidential election. One is the depth of clarity in her writing about issues and events that can confound the best and brightest. The other is the depth of her feeling for those with whom she has worked and the fact that they have been real people to her, not merely factotums in the US government’s actions. There is a wry sense of humour that is somewhat unexpected. This memoir, already a bestseller, is well worth reading to get a sense of the woman behind the public persona.
