My year's reading started on a high with Kate Atkinson's Life After Life (Doubleday). It's everything a novel should be: audacious, vibrant, brave and bold.

I also enjoyed Adelle Waldman's first novel, The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P (William Heinemann), which has the same verve and poise as another New York debut novel, Bright Lights, Big City.
