TWISTED: This awful film stars either Angelina Jolie or Ashley Judd as a cop with attitude who finds herself plunged into bottomless despair when bodies start piling up around her. "I'm my best suspect!" Angelina (or Ashley) cries at one point.

It is thus pretty much the same as all the other dark, creepy Ashley Jolie pictures we have been subjected to since the twin-headed glamourpuss emerged from the ooze. In fact, I am already unable to separate Twisted in my mind from High Crimes, Double Jeopardy, Taking Lives and The Bone Collector.

The production notes tell me that this is the one where Angelina Judd plays a recently promoted inspector who keeps getting blind drunk, blacking out and waking up to discover that somebody she once slept with has been brutally murdered. From that synopsis, you will have deduced that either Ashelina herself is the murderer or that she is the victim of some shockingly moronic contrivance which will eventually be pedantically explained to her by the murderer as he ties her to a railway line. Have I given too much away?

The only remarkable thing about the film is that it is directed by Philip Kaufman who, pathetically reminding himself of previous glories, includes a brief shot of the poster for his 1983 masterpiece The Right Stuff. Considering that no film by a once-great director since Coppola's Jack has shown so little evidence of any residual talent, this is rather as if Orson Welles had worn a Citizen Kane T-shirt while shooting his sherry commercials.
