media scope is now finished until after Christmas, but another great film competition will give Transition Year students something to do in the meantime!
The Film Institute of Ireland, in association with The Irish Times, will present Cinema in the Classroom screenings of Nicholas Ray's classic teen drama, Rebel without a Cause, starring James Dean - at four venues around Ireland: Irish Film Centre, Dublin, January 20th to 23rd; Kino Cinema, Cork, January 28th and 29th; Town Hall Theatre, Galway, February 3rd; and Orchard Cinema, Derry, February 9th and 10th. The media scope page will be devoted to the film on January 21st.
Schools that subscribe to media scope (FREEPHONE 1-800798884) can win free tickets for a whole class group to attend a screening. All you have to do is submit a script for one scene from the sort of teen movie you'd like to see! The scene may be any length, comic or tragic, and may be the work of an individual or a group. Send it to the media scope address given in `over to you', below, by Wednesday, January 15th. The three best will win class tickets to the screenings most convenient for them.
That competition is for media scope subscribers only, but there will be more contests, giveaways and a study guide for others who attend the screenings (the study guide will also be available to teachers who can't attend the screenings). Watch The Irish Times for details, and contact Tony Tracy at the Film Institute of Ireland (tel: (01) 679 5744; fax: (01) 677 8755) for further information.
