Come Good Rain - City Arts Centre

It begins in darkness, to the sound of crackling thunder

It begins in darkness, to the sound of crackling thunder. There is a staccato of drumbeats, and George Seremba enters bearing a candle. His story is about to be told again, as it has been the world over.

He begins with his boyhood in Uganda. One soon senses the inherent dignity and warmth of the extended family of which he is part, and the way in which his character has been shaped as he first leaves home for boarding school.

In the larger world, Milton Obote's tyranny is a cause for fear. When Idi Amin takes over, life becomes even more fearful. George moves on to university, to become a voice of dissent. Obote returns to power and, in the military maelstrom created by the warring dictators, life is cheap and those who think and speak are expendable. George is taken prisoner, tortured and left for dead in a forest. But the rain comes and literally saves his life. He survives and escapes.

The story is dramatic in itself. As delivered by the author, it is also compelling theatre. Mr Seremba communicates joy and grief, fear and dignified protest with absolute conviction. For over two hours, we share his odyssey, and are left with a sense of fellowship when it ends.

He is effectively assisted by Bisi Adigun on percussion and at times as vocal back-up. George Seremba has been to Dublin before with his narrative, which seems to increase in impact with the repetition.
